Summer in Strandir area in Iceland...

... is an experience and an adventure for young and old alike, whether plans include visiting the natural and historical landmarks or just taking it easy. In Strandir there is enough space to be alone with one’s own thoughts on an evening walk, whether one is a seasoned mountaineer aiming for the pinnacle or a novice hiker who chooses a relaxed stroll along the beach.

Bird Life

On the beach it is possible to find many things besides driftwood and shells. The bird life in Strandir is diverse, and the experience of finding a nest can be a very special one for children and adults.

In spring, The Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) lay their eggs in Orrustutangi, near the Guesthouse Kirkjubol, and visitors may walk around the area carefully. Arctic terns and black guillemots nest there also and are entertaining to watch.

The Common Eider

The Common Eider is a large sea-duck, which is distributed over the northern coasts of Europe, North America and eastern Siberia.

The eider's nest is built close to the sea and is lined with the celebrated eiderdown. This soft and warm lining has long been harvested for filling pillows and quilts, but in more recent years has been largely replaced by down from domestic farm-geese and synthetic alternatives. Although true Eiderdown pillows or quilts are now a rarity, eiderdown harvesting continues and is sustainable, as it can be done after the ducklings leave the nest with no harm to the birds.

The Common Eider is characterized by its bulky shape and large wedge-shaped bill. The male is unmistakable with its black and white plumage and green nape. The female is a brown bird, but can still be readily distinguished from all ducks, except other eider-species, on the basis of size and head shape. This duck's call is a pleasant "ah-ooo". The species is often readily approachable.
